Jerome Howes was born in 1955, a thirteenth generation Cape Codder. His father was a paintings and antiques dealer in Brewster, specializing in marine paintings and artifacts. Jerome grew up surrounded by an extensive private collection of 19th century ship portraits, both sail and steam, painted by the likes of Antonio Jacobsen, Robert Salmon, James E. Buttersworth, C.D. Cahoon, Charles Sidney Raleigh, Clement Drew, Frederick Cousins and others. He attributes his deep appreciation of the American marine tradition to those early years.

Largely self-taught, in 1994 Jerome devoted himself to painting and quickly gained a following on Cape Cod, Nantucket and the Vineyard. His popularity has traveled along the East Coast, and he is featured in distinguished private collections from North Carolina to Maine.
